Shepards Pie is such an easy but delicious dinner idea. It's great for busy families, and it's a great way to sneak vegetables into your picky child's diet.

Apparently, there are two different ways to make Shepards Pie. My husband said he's always had Shepards Pie with a beef gravy base, I've always had it with a tomato sauce base. There are so many different variations of food that no one set way is correct. I'm starting to cook more homemade dinners instead of relying on processed foods and ordering out all the time.

Making this version of Shepards Pie is easy!

I got this recipe from a friend of mine. I'm not sure if it's her original recipe or not. I simply call it Sherris Shepard's Pie, because her name is well you guessed it. Sherri!

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground meat
  • onion
  • can green beans
  • large can tomato sauce
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Mashed Potatoes

Those are ingredients you probably already have on hand at all times!

Meat is always a must-have in my house as my husband is your classic “meat and potato” kind of guy.

Directions:

The directions for this are so simple! The “hardest” part is making the mashed potatoes. I think this is a great recipe to have children help you make. They are more likely to eat it if they help you make it. They will feel so proud that they made dinner!

Season & brown the ground meat with onion. The amount of onion depends on how much you like onions. Put in the casserole dish with green beans, and mix with a can of tomato sauce. Top with mashed potatoes sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese. Bake at 350° for about half an hour. Let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.

You can make so many variations from this. The number of onions you use can be varied on your own tastes, onions can even be omitted if you choose. Fresh green beans can be used instead of canned. In the above picture, you can see corn. I used a bag of frozen vegetables as well as the canned green beans. You can pretty much use any types of vegetables you want. It's a great way to add more vegetables to your diet.

If you hide them in sauce and under mashed potatoes, the kids won't know they are there either! Unless they help make it.

I love my casserole dish set, they are Temp-tation brand, and have the full 6 piece set. They are heavier, but they are a great quality. I've had these dishes for years and they look brand new! Food does not stick to them and they are easy to wash even when I forget to use non-stick cooking spray first! Now that's a good feature right there. Who wants to scrub off baked-on food?

Another bonus is that they are:

  • Dishwasher
  • microwave
  • refrigerator
  • freezer-safe
  • oven-safe to 500F

My husband who claims he doesn't really like the tomato based Shepards Pie sure does eat a lot of it. Hence it doesn't last very long in our house and it's only the two of us! Maybe next time, I'll look up a recipe for him to make it the way he prefers. While I always say that though and never do it.

Which way do you prefer Shepards Pie? A tomato base or a gravy base?
